INFECTED BLOOD INQUIRY UK
The Inquiry will examine why men, women and children in the UK were given infected blood and/or infected blood products; the impact on their families; how the authorities (including government) responded; the nature of any support provided following infection; questions of consent; and whether there was a cover-up. The Inquiry has now begun its investigative work. The first stage is to obtain evidence and witness statements.
Former UK Health Secretary Andy Burnham's pivotal speech that helped instigate the UK Infected Blood Inquiry
Andy Burnham used his last speech as an MP to demand an inquiry into a “criminal cover-up on an industrial scale” in the NHS over the historic use of contaminated blood. He said that MPs including himself had failed thousands of patients involved and he threatened to pass evidence to the police if the government failed to act.
“Knowing what I know, and what I believe to be true, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I left here without putting it on the official record,” he told the House of Commons on Tuesday.
